Cyprus has recently introduced roadside drug testing. On the 15th of January the decree came in to action and the first tests were administered. An initial 9 peoplewere tested of which 5 had positive test results, shocking… not really considering some of the drivers i encounter on a daily basis. The government says the tests are targeted and not random (for now). So the best way to avoid any trouble, which includes:
- € 3500.00 Fine
- 3 to 6 Points on your driving licneses
- up to 3 years in prison
- or a combination of the above
is to stay away from any illegal substances whatsoever. But what happens if you are a law abiding citizen and still get tested? Surprisingly Saliva drug tests have a very high rate of “false positive” results. The government procedure after a positive test is to send a saliva sample to the government lab for a more thorough test still waiting for these tests results and going through the ordeal is less than desirable.
Shockingly, many foods and medications can cause a false positive result in saliva drug tests. So if you get stopped you might be in for a surprise after taking the test.
